Contemporary Social Issues
Today, we are witnessing momentous change in the interrelationships among humankind, nature, and society. Meanwhile, contemporary society is becoming increasingly complex. It is the mission of the Contemporary Social Issues Group to undertake interdisciplinary investigations of the latest issues in our society by applying approaches that draw upon both the humanities and the social sciences. For example, in viewing changes in outlook concerning family and individuals, it applies the perspective of gender theory, which regards gender differences as being socially constructed. Classes treat the shifting of norms concerning human life and death, and consider the ethical implications of problems posed by the drastic changes in the global environment. Other issues explored include new perspectives on society and humankind demanded by the IT-powered transformation of consumer society and multicultural society driven by the revolution in media technology. The Group is a training ground for theoretical dissection and practical handling of such intricate issues.
