１．英文和訳（各５点、計30点、部分点あり）

�@国土の規模が大きいので、多くのアメリカ人は、1980年代の航空産業の規制緩和により比較的安価なものとなった飛行機を使って旅行する。

�A会社は、年長の社員と、若年の明らかに人件費の安い社員とを交代させて経費を節約する。

２２点をとった実際の解答例を紹介します。
例１
It is true that the USA is a very different country from what it was 20 or 30 years ago. It is natural that people feel uneasy in the face of radical changes. However, in my opinion, No change does more harm than good and brings about no progress. If we want to make some progress, we must accept contemporary alternations of situations and conditions in society. It goes without saying that we do not have to accept bad changes, such as violence, inappropriate lifestyle and so on. Good changes, on the other hand, are the development of technology, communication, and education. What matters is whether the social changes are good ones or not for our society.
例２
I think that the author's point of view is biased. For example, she insists that the entertainment industry is a source of violence. It is not true. Media do not show us only bad information. She also notes that eating fast food is bad, however eating fast food for a change is good for family's communication. She is looking at only one bad side of these things. I think she should have a wider outlook.
例３
The author worries about the change of contemporary America. For example, she refers to the increase of violence. She blames the media for it. It is sure that the media sends a lot of violent scenes to the people, but I think the media is not always the reason for it. The viewers, especially, children or teenagers, accept the violent scenes as they are. At their age, it is difficult to distinguish the fantasy from the real world. So the people around them, such as parents and teachers, should let children know the truth and keep them from violent acts. No matter how much the society changes, it is the people who forms it. So I think the people must take care of themselves.

試験講評　平均点　６９．９点、　最高点　９２点、　最低点　３５点

教科書中心の比較的平易な問題を出題したが、全体としてよく出来ていたと思う。特に１の英文和訳、２の和文英訳は、いくつかの共通した誤りを除くとよく出来ていた。３の穴埋めは試験勉強をしていた学生はよく出来ていたようだ。４も準備して臨んだ学生はいい答案が書けていたが、全体としては物足りない出来のものが多かった。いくつか細かい点を指摘すると､１の�@ではderegulation 規制緩和の訳を間違えているものが多かった。また�Cのas well as も確かに、高校では　Ａ as well as B　をＢだけでなくＡもと習ったかもしれないが、素直に前からＡとともにＢもと訳した方がいい場合もある。�Cはその例である。１全般を通じて､意訳をしすぎて訳が不正確になっているものもあったので注意されたい。２に関しては、�@の「アメリカ化した」は、be Americanizedと受動態で表現するのが自然であるが､Americanizedを自動詞として用いた誤りが多かった。また�Bの離婚 divorce はdevorceとしたスペリングミスがやたらに多かったので注意されたい。またdiscourage A from B ing　をdiscourage A to B とした誤りが多かった。確かに「勧めて〜させる」という場合は､encourage A to B　なので誤りやすいところだが注意してほしい。４については、著者を男性と勘違いしている答案が多かったが､テキストの著者Joan McConnellは女性である。保守的な白人女性の考え方を代表しているエッセイが中心だったが､伝統的な家庭を強調しているところを男性と勘違いしたのかもしれない。３、４の英作文に共通した問題は､高校の英語教育のせいかもしれないが、makeを使役動詞として安易に使おうとしている学生がかなり多かったが､makeは例えば、He made me nervous.のようには使うが、He made me go to college. という表現はあまり自然ではなく、しかも「無理やり」というニュアンスがつきまとう。letやallow, persuade, get などの動詞の用法の使いわけを改めて復習したり､またなるべく使役動詞を使わないで、能動動詞を使うように心がけてほしい。４は「英文１パラグラフで書きなさい」という問題だったが、試験中に「パラグラフって何ですか？」という質問を受けた。授業でも話したことだが､パラグラフとは､トピックセンテンス＋本文＋結論という一つのまとまった内容をもった段落のことである。試験時まで知らなかったのも困ったことだが､質問しない大多数の学生にしても理路整然としたパラグラフになっていたものはごく少数にとどまる。最初に結論を一文で明示し（この場合は著者の意見に賛成か反対かを明らかにし）、次のその理由をいくつか挙げ､最後にまた「以上のような理由から私は著者の意見に賛成です（反対です）」と締めくくるという形にしてほしかった。今後英文を書く場合によく練習してもらいたい。
